Willamette is Fifth after First Day of NWC Spring Classic

(WOMEN'S GOLF) LAKEWOOD, WASH. - Willamette University was in fifth place in team standings following the first round of the Northwest Conference Spring Classic at the Oakbrook Golf and Country Club on Saturday, March 31. Whitney Uneo (So., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) and Rachel Shahbaz (Fr., Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy) each shot 83 to tie Brittany Johnston of Linfield for fourth place in the individual standings.

The two-day tournament will resume on Sunday, April 1. The first tee time on Sunday is set for 11:00 a.m. (PDT).

The top team after 18 holes was the University of Puget Sound with a score of 336. The Loggers were 18 strokes in front of Linfield College, which concluded the day in second place at 354. Pacific University was third at 357, followed by Whitworth College in fourth at 359, Willamette in fifth at 373, Whitman College in sixth at 413 and George Fox University in seventh with a score of 429. Pacific Lutheran University and Lewis & Clark College did not participate.

Emily Lau of UPS held first place in the individual standings with a 78. Leslie Wheeler of Linfield was second with a 79, while Adrienne Parrish from UP was third at 81.

The NWC Spring Classic is one of three events used to determine the NWC champion. Willamette won the NWC Fall Classic, with Ueno (So., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) earning medalist honors last October. The final championship event, which counts for double the value of each of the first two tournaments, will be held April 14-15 in Sisters, Ore., at the Aspen Lakes Golf Course.
