Willamette Men are Fourth after One Round at Pacific Invitational
(MEN'S AND WOMEN'S GOLF) FOREST GROVE, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's golf team held fourth place with a score of 310 and was just six strokes behind leader Concordia University (Oregon), as the first round of the Pacific Invitational concluded on Saturday, March 24 at the Meriwether National Golf Club in Hillsboro, Ore. The final round of the tournament is scheduled for Sunday, March 25 at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club (Ghost Creek Golf Course) in North Plains, Ore., starting at 8 a.m. (PDT).
Willamette's Martin Kraal (Sr., Springfield, OR/Springfield HS) carded a 75 and was tied with Taryn Braseth of host Pacific University and two other golfers for the individual lead. Other top scores for Willamette were a 77 by Grant Leslie (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) and a 78 by Ben Bryant (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS).
Concordia registered a team score of 302 to grab first place after 18 holes. Pacific was second at 306, with the University of Puget Sound in third at 308 and Willamette in fourth at 310. Whitman College was fifth at 329 and Lewis & Clark College was sixth at 348.
In the women's division, Whitney Ueno (So., HIlo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette was in second place with an 81. First place was held by Leslie Wheeler of Linfield College with a score of 77.
Concordia's women's team achieved a score of 334 in the first round to built a 28-point lead. Puget Sound ranked second at 362 and was followed by Linfield at 364 and Pacific at 378. Willamette did not field a complete team in the women's tournament.
The women played their first round at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore. The second round will be held at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club (Witch Hollow Golf Course), starting at 12 p.m. (PDT).
