Bearcats Win Five Events at Linfield Open
(TRACK & FIELD) McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Willamette University track and field athletes placed first in five events at the Linfield Open, hosted by Linfield College on Friday, March 16. The meet included athletes representing 12 colleges and universities, including Willamette and Northwest Conference opponents Linfield, George Fox University and Lewis & Clark College, plus unattached competitors in most events.
Winners for the Bearcats were Mariah Hanson (Sr., Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap HS) with a time of 26.13 in the women's 200-meter dash, Edith Polanco (So., Salem, OR/McKay HS) with a time of 11:58.71 in the women's 3,000- meter steeplechase, Elizabeth Andrews (Fr., Bellevue, WA/Bellevue HS) and Kristina Arquette (Sr., Tempe, AZ/McClintock HS) in a tie atop the women's pole vault list at 9' 6.25", Alex Jimenez-Zepeda (So., Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley HS) in the men's 1,500-meter run at 4:04.2, and Taylor Roholt (Fr., Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep) in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:52.11.
Grant Piros (So., Newberg, OR/Newberg HS) achieved an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying throw while taking second place in the javelin. His top throw was 190' 2" (57.96 meters), which surpassed the provisional standard of 188' 0" (57.30 meters).
Piros also took second place in the men's 110-meter hurdles. He completed the race in 16.26 seconds to finish 0.39 seconds behind the winner, Lloyd Massey of Western Oregon University, who was clocked at 15.87 seconds. Piros edged out Eric Snow of Linfield College and Roy Adams of Warner Pacific for second place at the finish line. Snow was third in 16.36 seconds and Adams finished fourth at 16.37 seconds.
Hanson won the 200-meter dash by 14 one-hundredths of a second over unattached runner Keyanna Jenkins, who finished in 26.27 seconds. Jennifer Luecht (Fr., Milwaukie, OR/Rex Putnam HS) of Willamette took third place with a time of 26.49 seconds. Luecht also finished third in the 100-meter dash, as she clocked in at 13.13 seconds. Hanson was fourth at 100 meters in 13.26 seconds.
Polanco won the steeplechase by 13 seconds. Maya Velez (Fr., Oakland, CA/Skyline HS), also from Willamette finished second in 12:11.71. The Beasrcats claimed second and third place in the women's 1,500-meter run, as Elizabeth Hart (Sr., Spokane, WA/Lewis & Clark HS) clocked in at 4:54.75 and Audrey Squires (Sr., Springfield, OR/Springfield HS) completed the race in 4:55.36. Casey Stepan of Linfield won the event in 4:49.53.
Andrews and Arquette led an impressive Top 5 sweep by the Bearcats in the women's pole vault. The co-winners were equalled at 9' 6.25" by teammate Maria Savoca (So., Rainier, WA/Rainier HS), who required more jumps. Savoca's third place finish was followed by Lynn Olson (Sr., Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS) in fourth place with a vault of 9' 0.25". Molly Lewis (So., Fox Island, WA/Gig Harbor HS) was fifth and Catie Doucette of Clark College was sixth, as they matched Olson at 9' 0.25", but needed more jumps.
The women's hammer included a 2-3-4 finish for Willamette. Emilie Burger (Jr., Saint Helena, CA/Saint Helena HS) placed second with a toss of 119' 0" and Holly Winter (Jr., Dundee, OR/Newberg HS) was third at 118' 6". Brittany Farrer (So., Medford, OR/South Medford HS) earned fourth place with a throw of 117'10".
Joel Flachsbart (Sr., Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS) achieved third place in the 800-meter run. HIs time was 2:00.19. Brandon Bennett (Jr., San Marcos, CA/La Costa Canyon HS) was fourth and Cliff Leek (So., St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) took fifth in the hammer throw, with tosses of 42' 6" and 42' 1", respectively.
Roholt's win in the steeplechase was by 3.46 seconds over teammate Austin Knutson (Fr., Portland, OR/Grant HS), who completed the event in 9:55.57. David Dorr (Sr., Philomath, OR/Philomath HS), also from Willamette, was third in 10:15.59.
The Bearcats return to action tomorrow (Saturday, March 17) at the Oregon Preview, hosted in Eugene, Ore., by the University of Oregon. The Oregon Preview is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. (PDT). Top collegiate and club track and field athletes will be competing at the meet.
