(ROWING) TACOMA, WASH. -- The Willamette University women's novice 8+ remained undefeated in 2006-07 with a win at the Daffodil Cup, hosted by the University of Puget Sound on American Lake on Saturday, March 24. Willamette won the 2,000-meter race in 9:05.8 after facing a tremendous head wind throughout the event. Puget Sound provided competition for the Bearcats in the women's novice 8+, as the Loggers entered two teams.

"I was thrilled with the women's novice 8," said Willamette Head Coach Susan Parkman. "They had a great race."

The Willamette women's novice 4+ took second place in a three-boat race. In other action involving Willamette, the Bearcats finished fifth in the women's varsity 4+ and the women's varsity 8+, while taking sixth place in the men's junior varsity 4+ and the men's varsity 8+.

Many of the day's races were completed, but the final five events were canceled due to persistent rain. Schools competing were Willamette, Evergreen State College, Gonzaga University, Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Lutheran University, University of Portland, Puget Sound, Washington State University and Western Washington University.

"It was very competitive with the Division I teams from Washington State and Gonzaga, plus Western Washington from Division II," Parkman noted. "The direct competition in Division III ... Willamette, Lewis & Clark, UPS and PLU was kind of nice to see. I feel the crew learned a lot today."

Willamette will begin Spring Break training on Tuesday, March 27. The Bearcats are scheduled to compete again on Saturday, March 31 in the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Invitational at Vancouver Lake, Wash.
