Bearcats Finish Sixth at NWC Championship
BLUE RIVER, ORE. -- Martin Kraal (Sr., Springfield, OR/Springfield HS) tied for eighth place with a 54-hole total of 223 and Willamette University took sixth place in the team standings at 935, as the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Championship ended at the Tokatee Golf Club on Monday, April 23. Whitworth College led all teams with a three-round total of 870 for an 18-stroke victory. The Pirates also claimed the overall NWC title.
Medalist honors went to Steven Johnson of Whitworth, who shot a 218 (69-73-76) during the two-day event. Brian Misterek (75-67-77) and Jason Casey (74-74-71), both from Pacific Lutheran University, tied for second at 219. Fourth place went to Andrew Parrott from Whitworth at 221 (80-70-71).
Three golfers tied for fifth place at 222. They were Patrick Dorsing of Whitworth (76-70-76), Chris Packard of PLU (75-74-73) and Sean Thompson of Whitworth (73-77-72). Kraal (74-73-76) and Jordan Carter of Whitworth (76-70-77) tied for eighth place, just one stroke away from the tie for fifth and only five strokes off the lead.
In the team standings, Whitworth's 870 was followed by Pacific Lutheran in second place at 889. Linfield College was third at 904, while Pacific University finished fourth at 910, the University of Puget Sound was fifth at 922, Willamette was sixth at 935, Whitman College was seventh at 962 and Lewis & Clark College took eighth at 1000.
Willamette fielded a complete six-man team. Kraal led the way and was followed by Ben Bryant (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) at 233 (82-74-77). Shane Adversalo (Fr., Honolulu, HI/The University Laboratory School) achieved a score of 235 (75-76-84). Dave Bennett (Jr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS) finished at 246 (81-81-84), while Grant Leslie (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) shot 249 (80-85-84) and Tyler Robinson concluded the event at 256 (90-82-84).
The NWC Championship tournament provided one-half of the total points in the overall NWC point standings. Final point standings, which determined the NWC champion, were:
1. Whitworth College, 26.5 points
2. Linfield College, 23.5 points
3. Pacific Lutheran University, 19 points
4. Pacific University, 16 points
5. University of Puget Sound, 15 points
6. Willamette University, 8 points
7. Whitman College, 4 points
8. Lewis & Clark College, 0 points
