Bearcats Place Fifth at Corban Spring Finisher
ELKHORN, ORE. -- With four of its top six players resting up for the Northwest Conference Championship later this week, the Willamette University golf team took fifth place at the Corban Spring Finisher, hosted by Corban College on Monday, April 16 at the Elkhorn Valley Golf Course. Concordia University (Ore.) won the tournament with a team score of 322. Linfield College was two strokes back in second place at 324, with Central Oregon Community College in third at 328, Corban College in fourth at 350, and Willamette in fifth at 391.
Medalist honors went to A.J. Lightheart of Concordia with a 73 (37-36). He was followed by Adam Lacey of Central Oregon CC in second at 76 and by Wade Douglas of Corban in third at 79. Four Linfield golfers and Matt Guthrie of Concordia tied for fourth at 81. Linfield's four 81s were recorded by Kyle Henderson, Tyler Nelson, Joel Rychard and Matt Taylor.
Willamette's top three finishers were David Bennett (Jr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS), Grant Leslie (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) and Robbie Beard (Fr., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS). Bennett led the Bearcats with a 91 (45-46). Leslie carded a 94 (45-49) and Beard finished the tournament with a 96 (44-52). Players for all five teams were hampered by wet grounds and occasional rain.
The NWC Championship, which counts for one-half of the points in the final NWC standings, will be held on Sunday, April 22 and Monday, April 23 at the Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River, Ore. A total of 36 holes will be played on Sunday, with the final 18 holes set for Monday.
