Fahey Wins Discus with NCAA Provisional Qualifying Throw
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University junior Melinda Fahey (Salem, OR/McKay HS) won the women's discus throw with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance of 136'10" during the Willamette Mini Meet #2, Saturday, April 14 at the Charles Bowles Track. Fahey also took third place in the hammer throw with a toss of 140'4", as she trailed only two athletes in the event, both from NCAA Division I opponent Portland State University.
For the Willamette men's team, Jacob Monroe (So., Keizer, OR/McNary HS) and Craig Sather (Fr., Junction City, OR/Junction City HS) took third and fourth, respectively, in the men's hammer throw. Monroe's toss covered 142'9" and Sather's toss went 135'4".
Clackamas Community College won six men's events. Portland State took first place in three men's events and three women's events. Willamette competed with a partial team following last week's Willamette Invitational and the Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championships earlier in the week.
In the women's pole vault, Elizabeth Andrews (Fr., Bellevue, WA/Bellevue HS) led the Bearcats with a fifth place finish at 10'0". Three other Willamette vaulters, Maria Savoca (So., Rainier, WA/Rainier HS), Molly Lewis (Fr., Fox Island, WA/gig Harbor HS) and Lynn Olson (Sr., Oregon City, OR/OregonCity HS) tied for sixth place at 9'6". Lewis also placed third in the triple jump at 30'8.25"
Brittany Farrer (So., Medford, OR/South Medford HS) placed fourthin the women's shot put. Her top throw was 38'4.75".
Fahey's third place effort in the women's hammer throw was joined by two more Bearcats in the top six. Molly Winter (Fr., Dundee, OR/Newberg HS) took fifth place at 126'1" and Emilie Burger (Jr., Saint Helena, CA/Saint Helena HS) placed sixth at 119'9".
The men's hammer throw also included three Willamette athletes in the top six. In addition to Monroe in third place and Sather in fourth place, the Bearcats also received a sixth place finish from Jayson Vogt (Sr., Twin Falls, ID/Twin Falls HS), whose toss went 119'9".
Andy Meuser (Fr., Portland, OR/Woodrow Wilson HS) was third in the men's 200-meter dash. His time was 23.67 seconds. Tristan Bodding-Long (Fr., Woodinville, WA/Woodinville HS) achieved third place in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 52.32 seconds. Adam Kotaich (Fr., Florence, OR/Siuslaw HS) placed eighth out of 19 athletes in the 1,500-meter run, as he clocked in at 4:14.06.
Matthias James (Bellingham, WA/Sehome HS), returning to action following an injury, cleared 12'1.50" in the pole vault in his first competition of the season. He took sixth place.
In the men's long jump, Dan Pearson (Fr., Granger, Wa/Dwight D. Eisenhower HS) of Willamette placed second at 19'10.25". Jonathan Woodland (So., Creswell, OR/Creswell HS) finished fourth at 18'9.75"
Willamette's top finisher in the men's discus was Vogt, who took second with a throw of 119'7". Cliff Leek (Fr., St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) led the Bearcats in the shot put, as he acheived third place with a distance of 41'3.75". Brandon Bennett (Jr., Wildomar, CA/Las Costa Canyon HS) was fourth in the shot put at 41'1.5".
Willamette's next competition will be at the Northwest Conference Championships in Tacoma, Wash., on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21. The University of Puget Sound is hosting the event, which will start at 2 p.m. (PDT) on Friday and at 10:30 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday.
