Willamette Competes at NCRC Invitational
VANCOUVER LAKE, WASH. -- The Willamette University rowing teams competed at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Invitational on Saturday, March 31. The regatta featured many of the top rowing teams in the Pacific Northwest, with the NCAA Division III Bearcats taking on several NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II opponents, as well as area Division III rivals Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Puget Sound.
The regatta featured two heats in most events, with the top three crews in each heat advancing to the finals. WU's women's novice 4+ advanced to the finals, after taking third in its heat with a time of 9:12.7. A total of 11 shells were entered in the WN4+ event. Willamette took sixth in the finals with a time of 10:04.9. Humboldt State University's "B" team won the race in 8:54.0.
Willamette's women's novice 8+, which entered the event undefeated during the academic year, took fifth place in a highly-competitive heat that included Division I teams from Long Beach State University and Gonzaga University, plus Division II teams from Western Washington University and Humboldt State. WWU won the heat in 7:30.6, with Gonzaga winning in the finals. Willamette's time of 8:10.7 would have placed third in the second heat and was better than the other NCAA Division III teams competing in the event.
Representing the Bearcats in the WN8+ shell were Eliza Edwards (coxswain), Julie Vernarsky, Kirsten Barta, Hilary Andrus, Jasmine Henry, Caitlin Dilli, Emily Mitchell, Meg Delph and Lacey Ellingson. The women's novice 4+ crew included Edwards, Andrus, Barta, Delph and Ellingson.
The women's novice 2- crew from WU placed fourth out of six teams in its event. There was only one heat, with Long Beach State taking first in 8:21.8. WU's time was 8:52.2.
In the NCAA Division III women's varsity 8+ race, Willamette took fourth, with just 23 seconds between Pacific Lutheran in second place at 7:30.1 and WU's time of 7:53.2. Puget Sound won the race in 7:19.6, while Lewis & Clark finished third at 7:43.3.
WU's men's junior varsity 4+ took fifth in 7:50.4, but was just 4.8 seconds out of fourth and 15.6 seconds out of third. The race was won by Humboldt State with a time of 7:28.2. WU's men's varsity 8+ also took fifth, as the Bearcats clocked in at 7:11.8. Gonzaga won the men's varsity 8+ in 6:28.6
