Willamette Holds Third Place after Day #1 of NWC Championship
SISTERS, ORE. -- Willamette University was in third place with a team score of 370 after the first day of the Northwest Conference Women's Golf Championship on Saturday, April 14 at the Aspen Lakes Golf Couse. The University of Puget Sound held first place at 348. Linfield College was second at 362, eight strokes in front of Willamette. Whitworth College was fourth at 375, Pacific University was fifth at 377, with Pacific Lutheran University sixth at 390 and George Fox University seventh at 406.
Individually, Whitney Ueno (So., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette, ranked third after 18 holes with a score of 84 (41-43). Leslie Wheeler of Linfield was in first place with a 77 (36-41), while Emily Lau of Puget Sound was second at 78 (35-43). Fourth place was held by Maresa Jensen of Puget Sound at 87 (44-43), with Adrianna Parish, also from UPS, in fifth at 88 (46-42). Only five golfers broke the 90-mark on the challenging Aspen Lakes course (Par 72, 5800 yards).
Other Willamette golfers joining Ueno in contributing to the team's score in the first round were Rachel Shahbaz (Fr., Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy), Michelle Benrath (Sr., Bend, OR/Bend HS), Andrea Hand (So., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) and Ashley Buchheit (Jr., Mt. Angel, OR/John F. Kennedy HS). Shahbaz, with a 95 (51-44), and Benrath, also with a 95 (51-44), were tied with each other for 17th place. Hand concluded the round with a score of 96 (47-49).
The NWC Championship is one of three tournaments used to determine the NWC team and individual titles. It is the last of the three tournaments and counts for one-half of the overall points awarded in the championship series. Tee times for the second round on Sunday, April 15 are set to begin at 9 a.m. (PDT).
