Willamette in Sixth Place after First Day of NWC Spring Classic

GRAHAM, WASH. -- Andrew Fitch of Linfield College shot a 73 for the individual lead after one round, helping the Wildcats hold first place by three strokes with a team score of 304, on the first day of the Northwest Conference Spring Classic, hosted by Pacific Lutheran University at The Classic Golf Course. Willamette was in sixth place with a team score of 323. The 36-hold event concludes on Monday, April 2.

Linfield was able to count four scores under 80 in its team total of 304. The Wildcats were followed by Whitworth College in second at 307 and by the University of Puget Sound in third at 311. Rounding out the team standings were Pacific University in fourth with a score of 315, Pacific Lutheran in fifth at 321, Willamette in sixth at 323 and Whitman College in seventh at 343.

Jeff Nigro of Linfield joined three other golfers two strokes out of the lead with 75’s on their scorecards. Other golfers tied fro second were Dan Cashmere of Pacific, Marc Phillips of Puget Sound and Bobby Elder of Whitworth. Brian Misterek from Pacific Lutheran was sixth after carding a 76. Willamette’s Martin Kraal (Sr., Springfield, OR/Springfield HS) was tied with Jordan Carter and Sean Thompson of Whitworth for seventh place at 77.

A total of six golfers from Willamette are entered in the tournament. Following Kraal on the scoring chart were Ben Bryant (So., Albany, OR/Albany HS) at 81, Shane Adversalo (Fr., Honolulu, HI/The University Laboratory School) at 82, Tyler Robinson (Jr., Salem, OR/Umpqua Valley Christian School) and Grant Leslie (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) at 83 and Dave Bennett (Jr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS) at 91.

The second round will begin on Monday at 10 a.m. (PDT), with action set to continue into the afternoon. The NWC Spring Classic is one of three tournaments used to determine the conference champion. One tournament was held in the fall, with the third tournament, the NWC Championship (54 holes), set for April 22-23 at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River, Ore. The first two tournaments each count for one-quarter of the title, with the NWC Championship counting for the final half.
