WU Golfers Finish Sixth at NWC Spring Classic
GRAHAM, WASH. -- Willamette University improved its 18-hole score by 10 strokes on the second day of the Northwest Conference Spring Classic on Monday, April 2, but the Bearcats couldn't move up in the team standings, as they remained in sixth place at the end of the tournament with a two-day total of 636. Willamette shot 323 on the first day, then recorded a team score of 313 in the second round. Linfield College and Whitworth College tied for first place at 602.
Linfield (304-298) held a five stroke lead over Whitworth (309-293) after the first day, but the Pirates registered the low round of the tournament on Monday. Following Linfield and Whitworth in the team standings were Pacific University in third place at 623, the University of Puget Sound in fourth place at 625, Pacific Lutheran University in fifth place at 627, Willamette in sixth at 636 and Whitman College in seventh at 674.
Medalist honors went to Andrew Fitch of Linfield, who shot 145 (73-72). Jeff Nigro from Linfield and Jordan Carter of Whitworth tied for second place at 148. Nigro carded a 75 in the first round, followed by a 73 in the second ground. Carter shot 77 on Sunday, then earned the tournament's low round of 71 on Monday.
Willamette's top finishers were Ben Bryant (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS), who registered an 81-77--158, and Tyler Robinson (Jr., Salem, OR/Umpqua Valley Christian School), who carded an 83-75--158. Bryant and Robinson both tied for 17th. Shane Adversalo (Fr., Honolulu, HI/The University Laboratory School), shot 82-77--159 and tied for 20th place. Martin Kraal (Sr., Springfield, OR/Springfield HS), who led the Bearcats with a 77 in the first round, shot an 84 in the second round to finish at 161. Also competing for Willamette were Grant Leslie (Fr., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) at 83-88--171 and Dave Bennett (Jr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS) at 91-85--176.
The NWC Spring Classic counts for one-quarter of the overall conference championship and is one of three tournaments used to determine the NWC title. The NWC Fall Classic, where Willamette also placed sixth, counts for another quarter of the title, with the NWC Championship, scheduled for April 22-23 at the Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River, Ore., counting for the final half.
WU's next action will be at the Corban Invitational on April 16 at the Elkhorn Country Club in Elkhorn, Ore. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. (PDT).
NWC Spring Classic - Final Results
