Brooke Smith Finishes Fifth in Heptathlon at Ultimate Multi-Events
NEWBERG, ORE. -- Brooke Smith (So., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) of Willamette University took fifth place in the heptathlon against strong competition, May 12-13 at the Ultimate Multi-Events, hosted by George Fox University. Brooke Barker of Pacific University finished in first place by a single point, scoring 4,363 to edge out Kristen Dormaier of Whitworth College, who concluded the competition at 4,362. Smith completed the seven events with a score of 3,579.
Smith recorded her top score (695 points) in the 100-meter hurdles, as she reached the finish line in 16.16 seconds. Dormaier took first in the hurdles with a time of 16.03 seconds. Smith also scored over 600 points in the high jump, as her successful attempt at 1.50 meters resulted in third place and 621 points. She was second in the javelin throw with a toss of 32.75 meters.
Barker edged Dormaier on the final event with a time of 2:30.03 in the 800-meter run for 693 points. Dormaier was just 3.22 seconds behind Barker, but her time of 2:33.25 provided just 653 points.
In the overall standings, Barker and Dormaier were followed by Terah Laack of George Fox in third place with 4,040 points. Michelle Forbes of Team XO was fourth at 4,029. Smith followed in fifth, while Suzy Viducich of Whitworth withdrew after recording scores in just three events. At the Northwest Conference Championships earlier this spring, Barker was first, Dormaier was second, Laack was fifth, Smith was sixth and Viducich was ninth.
Willamette will close out the regular season on Wednesday, May 16, by hosting the WU Last Chance Meet. Action at the Charles Bowles Track in Salem, Ore., is set to get underway at 3:30 p.m. (PDT).
