Schmit Selected First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University swimmer Cason Schmit (Sr., Oakland, CA/Bishop O’Dowd HS) has been named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII as part of the College Division Men’s At-Large Team, which was selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A total of 10 student-athletes received Academic All-District VIII honors on the College Division Men’s At Large Team. They are all eligible for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, which will be announced on Tuesday, June 12.
Schmit placed in top eight in three events at the 2007 Northwest Conference Swimming Championships. He finished third in the 100-yard backstroke, was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle and took eighth int he 100-yard freestyle. He recorded a career best with his time of 54.41 seconds during the finals of the 100-yard backstroke at the NWC Championships. Other top times for Schmit in 2007 were 22.27 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, 48.86 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 25.52 seconds in the 50-yard backstroke.
Five of the 10 athletes named to the Academic All-District VIII College Division Men’s At-Large Team were from the Northwest Conference. In addition to Schmit, other NWC athletes selected were Robbie Munday from Whitman College, plus Steven Johnson, David Dolphay and Sean Thompson from Whitworth College.
Schmit achieved a 3.75 cumulative grade point average at Willamette through the fall 2006 semester. Nominations were made prior to the completion of the spring semester. Schmit recently graduated after majoring in Mathematics and Psychology.
CoSIDA District VIII includes colleges and universities in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia. Athletes nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team were starters or key reserves with cumulative grade point averages of 3.2 or higher (4.0 scale). Each player was at his current college or university for at least one academic year.
The College Division includes players in NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA. The Bearcats compete in NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference.
