Bearcats Fall in Five Games for Second Consecutive Night

PORTLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University lost a Northwest Conference match in five games for the second consecutive night, as Lewis & Clark outlasted the Bearcats, 3-2, on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Pioneers won 30-18, 27-30, 24-30, 30-26, 15-11, to improve to 6-10 overall, 2-4 in the NWC. Willamette's record went to 2-12 overall, 0-6 in the conference.

Willamette received 19 kills from Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS), plus 13 kills each from Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) and Julie Stutzman (So., MB, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS). WU also achieved a .204 team hitting percentage for a slim edge over L&C's hitting percentage of .203. The Bearcats couldn't overcome 14 serving errors, while the Pioneers accumulated 16 service aces.

Nicki Smith led Lewis & Clark with 17 kills Katherine Fiedler added 15 kills. The Pioneers received 27 digs from Leah Collins. Sara Kettler and Jessamy Holland each registered five service aces.

Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB/DS, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) provided Willamette with 26 digs. Brittany Ashby (Jr., S, Federal Way, WA/Decator HS) contributed 21 digs to go with 50 assists.

In the fifth game, L&C achieved a 10-7 lead, but the Bearcats battled to within one point at 11-10,following a kill by Durham. The Pioneers then tallied three consecutive points for a 14-10 lead. Stutzman countered with a kill for WU, but Fiedler ended the match with a kill for the Pioneers.

Willamette opened the NWC weekend with a five-game loss at George Fox University on Friday, Sept. 28. GFU won that match, 30-32, 30-17, 27-30, 30-26, 30-15. WU will return to action on Friday, Oct. 5 with a home match against Pacific University. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m. (PDT).
