Bruins Outlast Bearcats, 3-1, in Final Match of Willamette University Volleyball Tournament
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University claimed a 30-24 win the first game of the Bearcats' match with George Fox University at the WU Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 1, but the Bruins won the next three contests, 30-18, 30-27, 30-17 to claim a 3-1 victory. GFU improved to 3-0 on the season. Willamette dropped to 0-4.
The Bearcats achieved a .316 hitting percentage in the opening game, with 16 kills and just four errors on 38 total attacks. WU trailed 5-0, 6-1 and 7-5 at the start of the match, but went on a 9-0 run for a 14-7 lead, with Julie Stutzman (So., MB, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) serving the last eight points of the run. George Fox crept as close as four points at 27-23, but WU took three of the next four points to win the game.
George Fox, which hit just 0.43 in the first game, hit a combined .286 over the final three games to finish at .214 on the night. The Bruins were led by Jennifer Panico with 15 kills and 20 digs. Elizabeth Anderson added 13 kills, while Jenna Dohren provided 14 digs. Amy Batchelder earned 53 assists.
Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) paced Willamette's attack with 13 kills. Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) tacked on 10 kills. Jordyn Smith (Sr., RS, Henderson, NV/Green Valley HS) led the Bearcats with 11 digs, despite missing the final game and a half after sustaining an injury. Setter Brittany Ashby (Jr., Federal Way, WA/Decatur HS) contributed 31 assists, seven digs and four kills.
The Bearcats will compete at the Whitworth University Tournament in Spokane, Wash., on Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8. Willamette will play Montana Western and Puget Sound Christian on Friday and will take on Lewis & Clark State (Idaho) and Evergreen State (Wash.) on Saturday.
