Linfield Edges Bearcats in Game #2 on way to 3-0 Win
McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Linfield College pulled out a slim two-point win in Game #2, helping the Wildcats sweep past Willamette, 3-0, in a Northwest Conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Ted Wilson Gym. Linfield defeated the Bearcats, 30-16, 32-30, 30-14, to improve to 5-4 on the season, 1-0 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 2-7 overall, 0-1 in the NWC.
Linfield led 12-6 early in the first game. Willamette countered with the next two points to cut the lead to four. WU also moved within four points at 18-14, but Linfield won three consecutive rallies on its way to a 10-1 run. Leading 28-15, the Wildcats gave up one point on a kill by Brooke Smith (Jr., MB/RS, Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) before scoring two straight points to win the game.
In the second game, the Bearcats held a 7-3 lead and remained in front until a kill by Molly Taylor pulled Linfield into a 15-15 tie. WU regained the lead with a kill by Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) and the teams were tied four more times before a three-point run by the Bearcats gave Willamette a 23-20 advantage.
The Wildcats answered with five points in a row, as Linfield took a 25-23 advantage. Willamette also trailed 29-27, but tied the game two points later. Willamette fought off another game point at 30-29, before the Wildcats won the game, 32-30.
Linfield held leads of 7-3 and 14-5 in the second game. The Bearcats were unable to get a rally going, as the Wildcats pulled away to close out the match.
Durham led Willamette with 12 kills and also provided seven digs. Kelly Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) contributed nine kills and a .240 hitting percentage. Christine Dion (So., RS/LIB, San Jose, CA/University of Portland) and Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB/DS, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) registered 10 digs each for the Bearcats.
Linfield hit .351 as a team. The Wildcats recorded just eight attacking errors, with just one in Game #2 and two in Game #3. Taylor and Katelyn Baker tied for LC's team lead with 13 kills. Kesley French added 11 kills. Hannah Veley led all players with 19 digs, while Stephanie Purser supplied 44 assists and 10 digs.
Willamette travels to Tacoma, Wash., on Friday, Sept. 14, to take on Pacific Lutheran University in a Northwest Conference match. First serve is set for 7 p.m. (PDT).
