Pacific Lutheran, Ranked #21, Defeats Bearcats, 3-0
TACOMA, WASH. -- Pacific Lutheran University, ranked #21 in NCAA Division III, defeated Willamette University, 3-0, in a Northwest Conference match at Olson Auditorium on Friday, Sept. 14. The Lutes won 30-19, 30-16, 30-16 to improve to 6-3 overall, 1-0 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 2-8 overall, including 0-2 in the NWC.
The Bearcats were led by Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS), with six kills, and by Brooke Smith (Jr., MB/RS, Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS), who achieved five kills. Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB/DS, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) topped the 'Cats with 11 digs. Brittany Ashby (Jr., S, Federal Way, WA/Decator HS) recorded 18 assists.
PLU followed the lead of Beth Hanna, who tallied 16 kills, had just one attacking error and hit .500 for the match. Stacie Matz and Kelcy Joynt each contributed 10kills. Gina Di Maggio provided 40 assists, while Megan Kosel led all players with 16 digs.
Willamette and PLU were tied 10-10 partway through the first game, but the Lutes went on a 6-0 run to move in front. After WU scored the next point, the Lutes added a 5-0 run to take control of the game at 21-11. In the second game, Pacific Lutheran surged out to a 13-4 lead, then outscored the Bearcats 14-11 the rest of the way. PLU, which tied for the 2006 Northwest Conference title, held a 10-4 lead early in the the third game.
The Bearcats opened their NWC schedule with road matches against both of last year's NWC co-champions. Linfield, which tied PLU for the title, downed Willamette, 3-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 12).
WU's next two matches will be at Cone Field House in Salem, Ore. The Bearcats will host Whitworth University on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. (PDT), before taking on Whitman College on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. (PDT).
