Shahbaz Places Fourth for Bearcats at Pacific University Women's Five-Way Tournament
BANKS, ORE. -- Willamette University sophomore golfer Rachel Shahbaz (Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academiy) earned a fourth place finish at the Pacific University Women's Five-Way Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Quail Valley Golf Course. Willamette placed fourth in the team standings.
Shahbaz achieved a score of 89 during the 18-hole event. She trailed only Brynn Hurdus of Linfield College, who earned medalist honors with an 83, plus Shawnie Dakan of Linfield, who took second at 87, and Tami Park of Pacific, who placed third at 88. Fifth place went to Jasmine Ching of Pacific with a score of 90.
Pacific won the team title at 362. Linfield wassecond with a score of 369, George Fox University took third at 373 and Willamette was fourth at 428. Whitney Ueno (Jr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS), Willamette's top women's golfer, is studying abroad this semester and will rejoin the Bearcats in the spring of 2008. Lewis & Clark College did not field a complete team at the Pacific University Women's Five-Way Tournament.
Shahvaz shot a 47 on the front nine and recorded a 42 on the back nine. Her 42 tied with Hurdus for the lowest score over the final nine holes. Also contributing a score two Willamette's team total were Ashley Buchheit (Sr., Mount Angel, OR/John F. Kennedy HS), Tanya Schiller (So., South Bend, WA/South Bend HS) and Marianne Ward (Sr., Sierra Madre, CA/La Salle HS). Buchheit finished with a 97, while Schiller and Ward each shot 121.
Willamette's next competition is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28 at the Linfield College Five-Way set for Michelbook Country Club in McMinnville, Ore. Tee time is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
