Shahbaz Ties for Fifth Place with 88 at Linfield Invitational
McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Rachel Shahbaz (So., Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy) shot an 88 to claim part of a three-way tie for fifth place at the Linfield Invitational Tournament in women's golf, Friday, Sept. 28 at the Michelbook Country Club. The event also served as the NWC Five-Way #2.
Pacific University won the team title with a score of 348. Linfield College was second at 359, with George Fox University in third at 361 and Willamette in fourth at 446. Lewis & Clark College, Corban College and Northwest Christian College did not field complete team.
Willamette was playing without it's top golfer, Whitney Ueno (Jr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS). Ueno, who placed 10th at the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2006, is studying abroad in Japan this semester. She plans to return to the Willamette campus next spring.
Jasmine Ching of Pacific won medalist honors at the Linfield Invitational with a score of 83. Second place went to Kelly Hartley, also from Pacific, who carded an 84. Third place was held by Brynn Hurdus of Linfield with a score of 85. Fourth place was earned by Brittany Zefkeles of George Fox with an 86.
Shahbaz, Brittany Johnston of Linfield and Tami Park of Pacific tied for fifth place at 88. Shahbaz and Park both shot 45 on the front nine and 43 on the back nine. Johnston overcame a 49 over the first nine holes to shoot a 38 over the final nine holes. The lowest nine-hole score was registered by Ching with a 38 on the back nine.
Willamette's next competition is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, when the Bearcats will host the NWC Five-Way #3. Tee time at the Illahe Hills Country Club is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
