Whitman Defeats Bearcats, 3-1, in NWC Volleyball Match
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University placed three players in double digits for kills, but Whitman College recorded 14 service aces and 8.0 team total blocks to defeat the Bearcats, 30-26, 30-26, 25-30, 30-21, in a Northwest Conference match at Cone Field House. Whitman evened its record at 6-6, including 2-2 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 2-10 overall, 0-4 in the NWC.
The Bearcats were led by Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS), with 15 kills. Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) provided Willamette with 14 kills and 18 digs, while Julie Stutzman (So., MB, Olympia,WA/Olympia HS) contributed 13 kills, five service aces and four total blocks.
WU also received significant statistics from junior setter Brittany Ashby Federal Way, WA/Decator HS). Ashby registered 42 assists and also supplied eight kills, a .350 hitting percentage, 11 digs and three aces. Willamette nearly kept pace with Whitman's 14 aces, as the Bearcats achieved 12 aces on the night.
Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB/DS, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) of Willamette led all players with 22 digs. Durham's 18 digs followed for the Bearcats, while Jordyn Smith (Sr., RS, Henderson, NV/Green Valley HS) finished with 17 digs and Edyth Lee-Barnes (So., OH/RS, Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS) added 12 digs.
Rosa Brey topped Whitman's offensive chart with 19 kills and a .457 hitting percentage. She also record four block assists. Leslie Compean tacked on 10 kills for the Missionaries. Kristan Brown led Whitman in digs with 17,while Kaelyn Merkel added 16 and Meg Clark earned 15. Six different WC players achieved at least one service ace.
Willamette will return to action on Friday, Sept. 28 at George Fox University. Match time in Newberg, Ore., is slated for 7 p.m. (PDT).
