Pioneers Outlast Bearcats for 3-1 Win
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University claimed a 30-21 win in the first game of the Bearcats' match with Lewis & Clark University on Saturday, Oct. 27, but the Pioneers won the next three contests, 30-24, 30-23, 30-10 to claim a 3-1 victory. Lewis & Clark improved to 10-15 overall, 6-9 in the NWC. Willamette dropped to 4-21 overall, 0-15 in the NWC.
The Bearcats had 13 kills and six errors on 38 attacks in the opening game. WU led 7-2 and 15-10 before going on a 5-2 run to open up their lead to 20-12, with Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) and Jordyn Smith (Sr., RS, Henderson, NV/Green Valley HS) tallying two kills apiece during this run. The Pioneers crept as close as three points at 22-19, but timely kills from Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) and terrific serving from Edyth Lee-Barnes (So., OH/RS, Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS) helped the Bearcats close out the first game 30-21.
Willamette continued their high level of play at the start of the second game by withstanding the early Pioneer pressure. The score was 6-6 until Lewis & Clark went on a 14-3 run to open up a 12 point lead at 21-9. The Bearcats fought hard to stay in the game and closed the gap to 24-28, with strong defense and serving led by Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) and Christine Dion (So., LIB/RS, San Jose, CA/Presentation HS). However, the Pioneers won the last two points to win the game, 30-24.
The third game featured 13 ties and eight lead changes as the Pioneers won 30-23. With the score tied 19 apiece, Lewis & Clark opened up a three point lead at 24-21. However, the Bearcats came right back with two points in a row on kills by Julie Stutzman (So., MB, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS). However, Lewis & Clark ended the game on a 6-0 run with one service ace by Kelsey Clark.
Lewis & Clark registered 16 kills in the fourth game to complete the match. The Pioneers opened the game on a 12-0 run and held off a late Willamette charge to finish off the game 30-10.
Lewis and Clark, which hit just .050, hit a combined .365 over the final three games to finish at .286 on the night. The Pioneers were led by Katherine Fielder with 16 kills and two blocks. Nicki Smith added 14 kills, while Jessamy Holland provided 28 digs. Lara Smith earned 37 assists.
Durham paced Willamette's attack with 13 kills and four digs, while Lindstrom tacked on 10 kills and four digs. Chedester led the Bearcats with 22 digs while adding two kills. For the second straight match, Dion filled in for injured starting setter, Brittany Ashby (Jr., Federal Way, WA/Decatur HS), and contributed 35 assists, 10 digs, one kill and one block assist.
Lewis & Clark won 21-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-10
