Puget Sound Downs Bearcats in Three Games
TACOMA, WASH. -- Monica Groves registered 20 kills and hit .514 to lead the University of Puget Sound to a 30-23, 30-16, 30-19 victory over Willamette University on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Memorial Fieldhouse. UPS moved to 11-6 on the season, while improving to 6-2 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette ended the match at 2-14 overall, 0-8 in the NWC.
Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) led Willamette with 10 kills and five digs as primarily a front-row player. Lindstrom hit .250 during the match, with just three attacking errors on 28 total attacks. Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB/DS, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) added a team-high 17 digs and two service aces, while Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) contributed seven kills and 12 digs.
Groves led all players with 35 total attacks. Her 20 kills were offset by just two attacking errors. She earned nine of her kills in Game #3. Also with double-digit kills for Puget Sound were Kalli Kamphaus with 11 and Lindsey Denman with 10. Rachel Gross provided the Loggers with 21 digs, while setter Jamee Fred provided 41 assists.
The Loggers took an 11-4 lead in Game #1 and later held a 19-9 advantage. The Bearcats rallied to within 23-17, but couldn't get closer, as UPS went up 1-0 with a 30-23 victory.
In the second game, UPS surged out to a 12-5 advantage. WU outscored the Loggers, 7-6, over the next 13 points, before Puget Sound went on a 12-4 run to end the game.
WU built a 4-1 margin at the beginning of the third game and also held leads of 5-2 and 6-4. Puget Sound edged past the Bearcats at 7-6, then the teams were tied at 7-7 and 8-8.
The Loggers gained a 15-9 edge with a 7-1 run. WU cut the lead to 19-14 on a kill by Brittany Ashby (Jr., S, Federal Way, WA/Decator HS). The Bearcats also were within five points at 22-17, but were unable to catch the Loggers.
Willamette returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Ore. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcats will also play on Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they are slated to host Linfield College in an NWC match at Cone Field House, starting at 7 p.m. (PDT).
