Willamette in Sixth Place after First Day of NWC Fall Classic
SPOKANE, WASH. -- The Willamette University men's golf team was in sixth place with a score of 328 after the first day of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic at the Spokane Country Club on Sunday, Oct. 21. Linfield College ended the round in first place at 300, with Pacific University three shots back at 303. Pacific Lutheran University was third at 305. Action continues on Monday, Oct. 22 with the final 18 holes of the vent.
Linfield, Pacific and PLU were followed by Whitworth University in fourth place at 311. The University of Puget Sound was fifth at 316, followed by Willamette in sixth at 328, Lewis & Clark College in seventh at 346, Whitman College in eighth at 353 and George Fox University in ninth at 357.
The individual leader was Chris Packard of Pacific Lutheran with a three-under-par 69 (35-34). He held a four-stroke lead over Ben Wright of Pacific, who shot a 73 (37-36). A group of eight golfers, including four from Linfield, were tied for third place at 75.
Willamette's low scorers were Robbie Beard (So., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) and Dave Bennett (Sr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS), each with an 80. They were tied for 18th on the leaderboard. Beard shot 41-39 and Bennett carded 42-38.
Shane Adversalo (So., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) was just one shot behind Beard and Bennett. Adversalo recorded a 44 on the front nine, but rebounded with a 37 over the final nine holes to finish at 81. Also contributing to the Willamette team score was Kevin Burfeind (Fr.), who registered a 43-44-87.
