Willamette Wins at Cascade in Four Games
PORTLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University defeated Cascade College, 30-25, 30-15, 31-33, 30-17, in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the Thunderdome on the Cascade campus. Willamette improved to 4-18 on the season, while Cascade dropped to 4-17.
The Bearcats were led by Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS), who topped all players with 14 kills and recorded nine digs. Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) added 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage for the Bearcats. Willamette used 13 players in the match and almost won in three games, before Cascade pulled out Game #3.
Willamette never trailed in the first game, but held just a 19-18 lead, before going on a 5-1 run for a 24-19 advantage. The run was completed by two kills from Lindstrom. Cascade pulled within three points at 26-23, but couldn't get any closer, as WU took a 30-25 win.
The Bearcats surged out to leads of 7-2 and 13-4 in the second game, as Willamette sailed to a 30-15 win. Six players contributed to 10 kills for the 'Cats during the game. WU also produced six service aces by five players to help pull away from the Thunderbirds.
Regulars Lindstrom and Julie Stutzman (So., MB, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) did not play in the third game, as Head Coach Tricia Wright had the chance to play several first-year players. Kate Zappas (Fr., S, Menlo Park, CA/Woodside Priory School) earned four assists during the game, while Meagan Harn (Fr., DS, Astoria, OR/Knappa HS) recorded two digs and an assist. Durham had four kills and Christine Dion (So., LIB/RS, San Jose, Ca/Presentation HS/Univ. of Portland) added three kills.
The Bearcats led most of the way in the third game, before Cascade took a 29-28 lead. Willamette killed off the ensuing match point, as well as match points at 30-29 and 31-30. Cascade broke a 31-31 tie by scoring back-to-back points on a pair of attacking errors by Willamette.
In the fourth game, WU took a 7-3 lead and later held a 21-6 advantage. The Bearcats registered 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage in the game, while holding the Thunderbirds to a 0.59 hitting percentage. Willamette won the game, 30-17, as Durham achieved five kills with just one error on 10 attacks.
Dion recorded 35 assists to set up WU's attackers. She also earned four kills, a .375 attack percentage and 10 digs. Durham and Lindstrom were the only players from either team to each double-digit kill totals. Each team had 10 players with a least one kill on the night.
The Bearcats registered 14 service aces and 10 serving errors during the match. Cascade struggled at the serving line, as the Thunderbirds committed 15 serving errors and had just six service aces.
Willamette will be at home on Friday, Oct. 26 against George Fox University, with the match starting at 7 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcats also will be at Cone Field House on Saturday, Oct. 27, to take on Lewis & Clark College at 7 p.m. (PDT).
