Zerzan and Batch are Named Northwest Conference Runners of the Week
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University runners Sarah Zerzan (Sr., San Carlos, CA/Notre Dame HS) and Ian Batch (Sr., Eagle, ID/Capital HS) have been selected as the Northwest Conference Men's and Women's Runners of the Week for meets held on Saturday, Oct. 13. At the Mike Hodges Invitational in Oregon City, Ore., Zerzan finished first among collegiate runners and was third overall in the women’s race, while Batch took seventh place among collegians and was 10th overall in the men’s race. The Mike Hodges Invitational was hosted by Clackamas Community College.
Zerzan completed the 5-kilometer course in 17:07.05, less than 18 seconds from her own school record of 16:49.4, which she set when she took first place at the Mike Hodges Invitational in 2006. In the 2007 race, Zerzan trailed only Amy Begley of the Nike Oregon Project and Dana Buchanan, who ran unattached.
Zerzan led three Willamette runners who recorded times under 18 minutes at the Mike Hodges Invitational. The Bearcats placed fourth in the women’s team standings behind the University of Oregon, Oregon State University and the University of Washington.
In the men's race, Batch recorded a time of 19:51.99 over the 4-mile course. Batch was one of four WU runners to finish among the top 16 collegiate entries, helping Willamette take third place in the team standings. First place went to the University of Oregon and second place was earned by the University of Washington.
Zerzan and Batch, as well as Willamette’s other Northwest Conference runners, will rest until the NWC Championships at Willamette Mission State Park on Saturday, Oct. 27. The NWC women’s race will begin at 11 a.m.(PDT), with the men’s race to follow at 12 p.m. (PDT).
A select group of other Willamette runners will compete on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Beaver Classic, hosted by Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. Race time is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. (PDT).
