Boxers Sweep Bearcats at Pacific Athletic Center
FOREST GROVE, ORE. -- Pacific University received 11 kills from Jill Peacock and 10 kills from Joanna Delanty, as the Boxers defeated Willamette University, 30-18, 30-25, 30-15, at the Pacific Athletic Center on Friday, Nov. 3. The Northwest Conference victory improved Pacific to 14-8 overall, 9-6 in the NWC. Willamette went to 4-21 on the season, 0-15 in the NWC.
Pacific built leads of 9-4 and 13-7 in the first game, but Willamette rallied to achieve a 16-16 tie. The final two points of WU's 9-3 run were scored on a service ace by Edyth Lee-Barnes (So., RS, Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS), followed by a ball-handling error by the Boxers. Pacific answered with eight consecutive points to start a game-ending 14-2 run.
The Boxers held off the Bearcats again in the second game. After leading 12-7, Pacific saw Willamette go on a 9-3 run for a 16-15 lead. Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB/DS, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) provided the go-ahead point on a service ace. Pacific scored the next two points to move in front, 17-16, but Willamette responded with a 5-2 run for a 21-19 advantage for the Bearcats.
WU also led 22-20, but the Boxers used a 7-0 run to regain the lead at 27-22. The run included two kills each by Peacock and Delanty. Willamette pulled within 28-25, but couldn't catch the Boxers, who scored the next two points to win the game.
Pacific never trailed in the third game. The Boxers moved out to a 12-6 lead. WU recorded the ensuing point, but Pacific countered with seven unanswered points for a 19-7 advantage.
Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) finished the match with eight kills for the Bearcats. Jessica Durham (Jr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) added seven kills and Brooke Smith (Jr., Rs, Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) tacked on six kills. Christine Dion (So. LIB/RS, San Jose, CA/Presentation HS/University of Portland) supplied WU with 22 assists.
Durham led the Bearcats with 13 digs, while Chedester accumulated 10 digs. WU had 7.0 team total blocks (3 solos, 8 assists), led by Julie Stutzman (So., MB, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS), who registered one block solo and four block assists.
Peacock's 11 kills and Delanty's 10 kills topped Pacific's offensive stats. Anela Iseke provided the Boxers with 30 assists and Melissa Dunn contributed a match-high 16 digs. Also earning double-figure digs for Pacific were Alyssa Finn with 13 and Iseke with 11. The Boxers achieved a .220 hitting percentage and had 8.0 team total blocks (two solos, 12 assists).
Willamette will conclude the season on Saturday, Nov. 3, when the Bearcats host Pacific Lutheran University. The match will be held at Cone Field House, with the first game set to start at 7 p.m. (PDT).
