Pacific Lutheran Scores Late in Each Half for a 3-1 Win over Willamette
SALEM, ORE. -- Greg Beasley (Fr., F, Camas, WA/Camas HS) pulled Willamette University into a 1-1 tie with Pacific Lutheran University by scoring at 31:04 on Saturday, Nov. 3, but PLU scored late in each half for a 3-1 victory over the Bearcats. Pacific Lutheran broke the tie with a goal 2:04 before halftime, then added an insurance goal with 4:17 remaining in the game.
The Lutes improved to 13-6-1 overall, 11-2-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette ended its season at 2-15-2 overall, 0-13-1 in the NWC.
PLU scored the opening goal just 4:38 into the contest on a penalty kick sent into the right half of the net by Michael Ferguson. It was the 14th goal for Ferguson this season. Beasley scored the equalizer on a five-yard header, as he converted a corner kick pass from the right side by Michael Rodrigues (Sr., MF, Beaverton, OR/Southridge HS).
The Lutes took a 2-1 halftime lead on Brennan Brown's first goal of the year. He headed a loose ball in the penalty area and placed it into the left side of the goal. Brown's header was taken from about nine yards upfield and to the right of the goal.
Trevor Jacka added PLU's third goal at 85:43 on another header, this time on a corner kick. Jason Bjorgo, who earned an assist on the play, took the corner from the right side and found Jacka just two yards away from the left post.
PLU outshot the Bearcats, 22-7, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. The Lutes also claimed a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Ferguson and Jacka led the Lutes with five total shots each. Beasley took five shots for the Bearcats.
Goalkeeper Mark Bennett (So., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) of Willamette registered five saves. Daniel Mangum earned one save for Pacific Lutheran.
