Puget Sound Holds Off Bearcats for 3-1 Victory
SALEM, ORE. -- Senior middle blocker Monica Groves provided 18 kills to lead the University of Puget Sound to a 30-27, 30-14, 24-30, 30-11 victory over Willamette University, in a Northwest Conference match at Cone Field House on Saturday, Nov. 3. Groves made just three attacking errors on 39 total attempts and earned a .385 hitting percentage to carry the load for UPS. Willamette concluded its season at 4-22 overall and 0-16 in the NWC, while the Loggers improved to 17-8, including 12-4 in the NWC.
Willamette was led by junior Jessica Durham (OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS), who contributed a team-high 17 kills and achieved 10 digs. Durham had an outstanding weekend for the Bearcats, with 24 kills, 23 digs and 2.5 total blocks in two matches. She produced seven kills and thirteen digs against Pacific University on Friday (Nov. 2). She finished second on the team with 334 digs this season.
Puget Sound was paced by Groves, whose 18 kills led all players. She also achieved three block assists. Lindsey Denman supplied 16 kills and seven digs for the Loggers. Kalli Kamphaus earned 13 kills. Jamee Fred led the Loggers with 33 assists and added 10 digs.
The opening game was a battle, as neither team led by more than six points. Puget Sound held leads of 6-1, 23-17, and 27-21, but Willamette climbed back to within a point at 27-26 off an error by the Loggers. However, Puget Sound won three of the next four points to claim the game, 30-27.
In the second game, the Loggers surged out to an 11-5 lead. The Bearcats fought hard to match the Loggers, but the initial deficit proved to be too great, as Puget Sound claimed 15 of the last 20 points to win, 30-14.
In the third game, WU took a 13-9 lead but the Loggers kept it close, as neither team led by more than five points the entire game. The score was tied at 21 apiece before Kelley Lindstrom (Jr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) added a kill that ignited the Bearcats on a 9-3 run to win the game, 30-24. Eight of the nine points during the run were scored on kills by Durham, Lindstrom and senior Jordyn Smith (Sr., RS, Henderson, NV/Green Valley HS). The Bearcats registered 18 kills and a .229 team hitting percentage in the game, while holding the Loggers to a .096 hitting percentage.
Puget Sound registered 18 kills in the fourth game to complete the match. The Pioneers opened the game with a 10-1 run and held off a late Willamette charge to finish off the game at 30-11.
Although Durham led WU’s efforts, several other Willamette players made solid contributions. Lindstrom finished the game with 10 kills, five digs, and one block. Julie Stutzman (So., MB, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) had seven kills, six digs, and four block assists.
Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB/DS, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito HS) of Willamette led all players with 29 digs and added two service aces and two assists. Christine Dion (So. LIB/RS, San Jose, CA/Presentation HS/University of Portland) supplied the Bearcats with a match-high 42 assists, while contributing 14 digs and one solo block. Edyth Lee-Barnes (So., RS, Corvallis, OR/Corvallis HS) contributed 18 digs.
It was the final match for senior co-captain Jordyn Smith. She ended the night with 10 kills on 28 total attacks, to go with nine digs, four block assists, two service aces and one assist.
For the season, Smith achieved 116 kills on 459 total attacks, plus 26 assists, 31 service aces, 137 digs and 31 block assists. During her career, Smith played in 90 matches and 311 games. She achieved career totals of 417 kills, 88 aces, 295 digs, 108.5 blocks, and 93 assists.
On the Willamette season stats, Lindstrom led the team with 319 kills, averaging 3.16 kills per game. Stutzman led the team with 27 solo blocks, 50 block assists and 77 total blocks. Stutzman also led the team with 47 service aces. Brittany Ashby (Jr., Se, Federal Way, WA/Decatur HS) led in assists with 830, while Chedester’s 463 digs surpassed her teammate’s totals.
