Whitworth Swims Past Willamette in Northwest Conference Dual Meet
SALEM, ORE. -- Whitworth University swept the men's and women's team titles against Willamette University on Saturday, Nov. 17, in a Northwest Conference swimming meet at the Willamette Natatorium. In the women's competition, Whitworth won 131-63. The Pirates won the men's competition, 144-38.
Whitworth's women improved to 5-0 on the season (4-0 NWC),while the Whitworth men moved to 5-1 overall (4-0 NWC). Both of Willamette's teams fell to 0-3 overall (0-3 NWC).
Willamette's women opened the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. WU's team of Shannon Gima (Sr., Alameda, CA/Lick Wilmerding HS), Jenna Larrow (So., Boise, ID/Timberline HS), Brittany Thiemens (Sr., Bellevue, WA/Bellevue Senior HS) and Bridget Sutherland (Sr., Everett, WA/Everett HS) achieved a winning time of 4:26.32. Whitworth's top team of Allison Shigley, Kathleen Lilleness, Brenda Foster and Jorie Turner finished more than three seconds alter at 4:29.78.
The Bearcats also received a win from Chelsea Hollingsworth (Sr., Portland, OR/Woodrow Wilson HS) in the women's 100-yard freestyle. She completed the race in 59.66 seconds, more than two seconds in front of Lilleness of Whitworth, who clocked in at 1:01.83.
Larrow swam unopposed in the 1,000-yard freestyle. She recorded a time of 11:45.63 for a new season best.
Whitworth won the remaining women's events. Multiple event winners for the Pirates were Samantha Kephart, in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly, and Jorie Turner, in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke.
In the men's events, Kevin Tangeman (So., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) of Willamette swam unopposed in the 1,000-yard freestyle. His time was 11:39.47.
Willamette's Matt Tanigawa (So., Kailua, HI/Hawaii Baptist Academy) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, as he completed the sprint in 23.99 seconds. Bryan Clarke of Whitworth won the event by 0.7 seconds and registered a time of 23:29.
The Whitworth men's team received multiple wins from Michael Woodward and Bryan Clarke. Whitworth won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.60. He also took first place in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:14.53. In addition to winning the 50-yard freestyle, Clarke also finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.80.
Willamette's next swimming competition is the Northwest Invitational on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The event will be hosted by Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.
