WU Places Seven Entries into Championship Finals on Second Day of Northwest Invitational

McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Willamette University advanced six entries into the championship finals and placed eight entries into the consolation finals on the second day of the Northwest Invitational, Saturday, Dec. 1 at Linfield College. Action will conclude Saturday night with the championship finals and the consolation finals in all remaining events.

Gwen Schulze (So., Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap HS) and Bridget Sutherland (Sr., Everett, WA/Everett HS) both reached the championship finals in the women's 200-yard butterfly. Schulze was fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:04.30. Sutherland followed one-half second behind in fifth place at 1:04.80.

Hanna Connett (Fr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) also advanced to the championship finals for the women's team, after placing sixth in the prelims for the 200-yard breaststroke. Connett's time was 2:46.50.

For the Willamette men's team, Matt Tanigawa (So., Kailua, HI/Hawaii Baptist Academy) was sixth in the preliminary heats in the 400-yard individual medley. He earned a spot in the championship finals with a time of 4:55.67.

John Schmidtbauer (Fr., Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) and Kevin Tangeman (So., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) claimed berths in the championship finals of the 200-yard freestyle. Schmidtbauer was seventh in the prelims at 1:57.31, while Tangeman was eighth at 1:58.47.

Advancing to the consolation finals for the Willamette women's team were:

Women's 200-yard Freestyle (2:13.01, 10th in prelims)
