Whitman Sweeps Willamette in NWC Swimming

SALEM, ORE. -- Whitman College swept Willamette University in a Northwest Conference swim meet on Friday, Jan. 11, as the Missionaries defeated the Bearcats in the women’s match, 104-97, and downed WU in the men’s match, 153-52. The Whitman men improved to 2-2 in conference, while the women improved to 3-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette dropped to 0-4 in the Northwest Conference.

Jenna Larrow (So., Boise, ID/Timberline High) recorded the fastest time in the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle, as she clocked in at 11:47.93 to finish 48.2 seconds in front of Rhea Edelman, who was timed at 12:38.13. Larrow also placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:13.97 and was part of the relay team that finished second at 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:02.66.

Willamette cleaned up on the 50-yard freestyle, as both Brittany Thiemens (Sr., Bellevue, WA/Bellevue Senior HS) and John Schmidtbauer (Fr., Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) won with times of 26.25 and 23.00. Thiemens also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.72 and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.69. Schmidtbauer also won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.85. His time was 1.58 seconds faster than Eric Molnar from Whitman, who finished with 54.47. Schmidtbauer also was on the Bearcat team that placed second in the men's 200-yard medley relay.

Gwen Schulze (So., Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap HS/Austin College) won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.03, which was a margin of victory of 2.13 seconds over Kendi Thomas, who finished in 1:08.16. Schulze also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.97, only 1.09 seconds behind Erin Pettersen of Whitman.

The Willamette women dominated the 500 yard freestyle, taking home the top three spots. Hanna Connett (Fr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5.41.50, Bridget Sutherland (Sr., Everett, WA/Everett HS) finished second with a time of 5:49.43, while Shannon Gima (Sr., Alameda, CA/Lick Wilmerding HS) rounded out the podium with a time of 5:56.75.

Gima and Sutherland combined with Whitney Pryce (So., Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury HS) and Chelsea Hollingsworth (Sr., Portland, OR/Woodrow Wilson HS) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:50.75 over teammates Bekah Hykan (Fr., Superior, CO/Monarch HS), Chelsea Ibarra (Fr., Santa Cruz, CA/Georgiana Bruce Kirby Prep.), Coral Sorenson (So., Sammamish, WA/Seattle University), and Jenna Larrow, who placed second with a time of 1:56.43.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they complete the weekend with an NWC dual meet at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. Willamette and the Boxers are slated to start the meet at 11 a.m. (PST) using the long format
