Willamette Women and Linfield Men win NWC Dual Meet

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's team and the Linfield College men's team claimed victories on Saturday, Jan. 19, during a Northwest Conference swimming meet at the Willamette Natatorium. Willamette's women won 112-79 and improved to 2-4 on the season, 2-4 in the NWC. Linfield's men won 129-50 and moved their record to 5-4 overall, 5-1 in the NWC.

Linfield fell to 0-8 overall, 0-6 in the NWC in women's swimming. Willamette dropped to 0-6 overall, 0-6 in the NWC in men's swimming.

Brittany Thiemens (Sr., Bellevue, WA/Bellevue HS) and Hanna Connett (Fr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) led the Willamette women's team. Theimens won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.97 seconds, Connett won the 200-yard breastroke in 2:46.90, and both swimmers tied for first place in the 100-yard freestyle at 58.60 seconds.

Willamette took an early lead by earning first and second place in the women's 400-yard medley relay. WU's team of Gewn Schulze (So., Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap HS/Austin College), Shannon Gima (Sr., Alameda, CA/Lick Wilmerding HS), Bridget Sutherland (Sr., Everett, WA/Everett HS) and Chelsea Hollingsworth (Sr., Portland, OR/Woodrow Wilson HS) combined for a winning time of 4:26.32.

Jenna Larrow (So., Boise, ID/Timberline HS) won the women's 1,000-yard freestyle for the Bearcats with a time of 11:49.96. She won the event by just under one minute and 13 seconds.

The Bearcats were victorious in the 400-yard freestyle relay to complete the women's events. Willamette's winn 400 relay team included Whitney Pryce (So., Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury HS), Hollingsworth, Gima and Thiemens. Their time was 3:58.81. Linfield's team of Patty Peters, Lauren Anderson, Rose Hollingsworth and Fatima Valle placed second with a time of 4:02.31

Hollingsworth won two events for the Wildcats. She was first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.72 and received a judges decision for first place in the 200-yard backstroke.

Willamette took first place in two individual men's events. John Schmidtbauer (Fr., Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.87 seconds. Second place went to Conor Moynihan of Linfield in 51.85 seconds. WU's other victory was achieved by Pete Kahn (Sr., Billings, MT/Billings HS), who finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.70.

Two swimmers each recorded a pair of wins for Linfield. Dominic Rieniets earned first place in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.61 and the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.03. Kevin Caple won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.78 seconds and took first in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:58.82.

Willamette will close out its dual meet schedule on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Pacific Lutheran University. Meet time is set for 1 p.m. (PST) in Tacoma, Wash.
