MEDFORD, ORE. -- Led by a 79 from sophomore Shane Adversalo (Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School), the Willamette University Bearcats held second place after one day of competition at the George Fox Invitational #1, Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Centennial Golf Club. Willamette recorded a team score of 330, placing the Bearcats behind Pacific University, which shot 314. George Fox University was third at 367 and Northwest Christian College did not have a complete team. The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Monday, Feb. 25.

Adversalo was third in the individual standings at the end of the first round. Max Bonk and Taryn Braseth, both from Pacific, were tied for first place at 75. Justin Ahrans of Northwest Christian and Jordan Fisher of Pacific were tied for fourth place at 80. Willamette's Alex Bennett (So., Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS) was sixth with an 81.

Willamette's team score also included the results for Robbie Beard (So., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) and Dave Bennett (Sr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS). Beard and Bennett each concluded the round with a score of 85. Also competing for Willamette were Kevin Burfeind (Fr., Kalispell, MT/Flathead HS), who carded a 92, and Ian Osborne (Fr., Carmel, CA/Carmel HS), who finished the day with a 96.

The course was in great condition and the greens played fast. Even so, the round was complicated by wind, which blew at a steady 5 to 10 miles per hour with gusts between 20 and 30 miles per hour.

"It was very windy and very cold," said WU Head Coach Steve Prothero. "And the win was coming from the non-prevailing direction. Some of the shorter holes were playing longer and the long par fours were almost impossible."
