Bryant is Tied for Fifth after First Round of NWC Spring Classic
BANKS, ORE. -- Ben Bryant (Jr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) of Willamette University shot a 75 in the first round of the Northwest Conference Spring Classic on Saturday, March 29 at the Quail Valley Golf Course. When the day ended, he was tied with three other golfers for fifth place. Max Bonk of Pacific University was leading the tournament with a 1-under-par 71.
Bonk was followed by Andrew Fitch of Linfield College and Tim Andrew of Pacific, who were tied for second place at even-par 72. Kevin Duerr from Linfield was fourth in the medalist race with a score of 74.
Bryant carded a 37 on the front nine, then shot a 38 on the back nine. He was joined in the tie for fifth place at 75 by Taryn Braseth of Pacific, Jordan Carter of Whitworth University and Ben Wright of Pacific.
Willamette was sixth in the team standings after 18 holes. Pacific owned first place with a score of 293. Linfield ranked second at 302, with Whitworth in third at 309 and the University of Puget Sound in fourth at 322.
Pacific Lutheran University was just one stroke behind UPS at 323, and Willamette followed at 333. Whitman College was seventh with a score of 340, while George Fox University was eighth at 354 and Lewis & Clark College was ninth at 401.
Bryant led Willamette's six golfers participating in the tournament. His score and those of Dave Bennett (Sr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS), Robbie Beard (So., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) and Grant Leslie (So., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) were included in WU's overall score. Bennett shot an 85 (40-45), while Beard carded an 86 (44-42) and Leslie registered an 87 (43-44).
Action at the NWC Spring Classic will conclude with another 18 holes on Sunday, March 30. Tee time is set for 11:30 a.m. (PDT).
