Bryant Ties for Sixth Place at Willamette Invitational
SALEM, ORE. -- Ben Bryant (Jr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) tied for sixth place with a 157 to lead three Willamette University golfers in the top 20, and the Bearcats took seventh place in the team standings, during two rounds of action at the Willamette Invitational on Monday, March 17 at Creekside Golf Club. Northwest Nazarene University won the team title with a score of 631.
Joining Bryant in the top 20 were Shane Adversalo (So., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) and Robbie Beard (So., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS). Adversalo registered a 159 (79-80) to take 15th place, while Beard carded a 161 (79-82) to finish 17th. Dave Bennett (Sr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS) of Willamette shot 171 (86-85) to tie for 32nd in the 58-player field.
Northwest Nazarene took first place by five strokes over Central Oregon Community College, which shot 636 to finish in second. A total of 10 teams competed in the 36-hole event.
Justin Ahrens of Northwest Christian College earned the individual championship with a 2-over-par 146. He had an even-par 72 in the first round and carded a 74 over the final 18 holes. His 72 was the low round of the event.
Ahrens won the title by four strokes. Chris Packard of Pacific Lutheran University was second with a score of 150 (74-76). Ben Sisler from Corban College was third at 154 (79-75).
Two golfers tied for fourth place. Dale Raybould of NNU shot 79-76--155 and was matched by Greg Swanson from the University of Puget Sound, who shot 73-82--155. Swanson held second place at the end of the first round.
A total of seven golfers tied for sixth place at 157. Joining Bryant, who shot 82-75, were David Green of COCC (76-81), Jordan Hodge of Puget Sound (76-81), Rowdy Hope of NNU (79-78), Brent McKee of Northwest Christian (78-79), Daniel Sloan from Lewis & Clark College (81-76) and Leon Vasquez of NNU (80-77).
Bryant's 75 in the second round tied Sisler of Corban and David Mattie of COCC for the second lowest score over the final 18 holes. The 74 by Ahrens was the lowest score recorded during the second round. In the first round, Ahrens' 72 was followed by Swanson of UPS at 73 and Packard of PLU at 74.
In the team standings, Northwest Nazarene and Central Oregon CC were the only squads to finish in the 630's. The next five teams were each separated by a single stroke. Corban finished third at 644, Northwest Christian was fourth at 645, Puget Sound took fifth at 646, Pacific Lutheran was sixth at 647 and Willamette was seventh at 648. Eighth place went to Linfield College at 676, while Lewis & Clark took ninth at 732 and George Fox University was 10th at 738.
Puget Sound led by one stroke after the first round with a 317, while NNU was second at 318 and Central Oregon and Northwest Christian were tied for third at 319. In the second round. the Crusaders surged into the lead by shooting 313, while COCC carded a 317, Northwest Christian shot 326 and UPS scored 329.
The Bearcats will return to the links March 29-30 at the Northwest Conference Spring Classic. The event will be held at Quail Valley Country Club in Banks, Ore.
