Track and Field Starts Home Meet with First Day of Decathlon and Heptathlon

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University track and field teams began this weekend's home meet against Western Oregon University, Southern Oregon University and Oregon State University with the first day of the decathlon and heptathlon on Friday, March 14, at the Charles Bowles Track. Action in the meet will continue on Saturday, March 15 starting at 9 a.m. (PDT), with a full schedule of running and field events, plus the remaining events in the decathlon and heptathlon.

The decathlon went through five events on Friday. Clint Hickey of Western Oregon was in first place with 3,176 points. Grant Piros (Jr., Newberg, OR/Newberg HS) of Willamette was second at 3,018 points and Trevor May (Fr., Florence, OR/Siuslaw HS) of Willamette was third with 2,777 points.

Hickey won all five events on the first day, but was pressed by Piros each time. Hickey won the 100-meter dash in 11.55 seconds, with Piros close behind at 11.67 seconds. In the long jump, Hickey went 19'11" and Piros registered a jump of 19'5.5". In the shot put, Hickey recorded a toss of 35'1.25" and Piros achieved a throw of 34'5.75".

In the final two events of the day, Hickey cleared 5'10" in the high jump and was timed at 52.93 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Piros took second in the high jump at 5'7" and was third in the 400 with a time of 53.28 seconds. May edged Piros for second in the 400 with a time of 53.26 seconds.

The heptathlon involved three Willamette athletes with no other entries in the competition. Brooke Smith (Jr., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) had a solid day, as she scored a total of 2,491 points in four events. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.88 seconds, took first place in the high jump at 5'1.75", placed first in the shot put with a throw of 32'7.75" and was second in the 200-meter dash at 29.26 seconds.

First place in the 200-meter dash was earned by Jessica Cobley (Fr., Queensbury, NY/Queensbury HS). She completed the race in 29.01 seconds. Sarah Burton (Fr., Fallon, NV/Churchill County HS) was second in the overall standings at the end of the day with 1,841 points. Cobley was third with 1,401 points.

Grant Piros has 3,018 points midway through the decathlon. His top event, the javelin, is one of the events set for Saturday.
