Ueno Holds Five-Stroke Lead after First Day of NWC Spring Classic
BANKS, ORE. -- Whitney Ueno (Jr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette University shot an 81 on the first day of the Northwest Conference Spring Classic to take a five-stroke lead midway through the 36-hole event, Friday, March 28 at the Quail Valley Golf Course. The tournament will conclude with the second round on Saturday, March 29, starting at 11:30 a.m. (PDT).
Ueno showed the best command of the course despite weather conditions that varied from sunny skies to hail, rain, snow and high winds. She finished the day at 9-over-par for a solid score considering the impact of the weather.
Brittany Zefkeles of George Fox University was in second place with an 86, while Maresa Jenson from the University of Puget Sound completed the day in third place with an 88.
Three golfers were tied for fourth place. Brynn Hurdus of Linfield College, Kelly Harley of Pacific University and Brittany Johnston from Linfield each carded an 89.
Ueno was joined by three other Bearcats on Friday's scorecard. Ashley Buchheit (Sr., Mount Angel, OR/John F. Kennedy HS) finished the day at 103, while Andrea Hand (Jr., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) carded a 117 and Marianne Ward (Sr., Sierra Madre, CA/La Salle HS) shot a 121.
Pacific led the team standings with a score of 363 for a three-stroke lead over Puget Sound, which shot 366. Linfield followed in third place at 369, while George Fox was fourth at 372. Whitworth University held fifth place at 382 and Willamette was sixth at 422. Pacific Lutheran University and Whitman College did not field full teams.
