Ueno Ties for UPS Invitational Championship
TACOMA, WASH. -- Whitney Ueno (Jr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette University rallied from two strokes behind after the first day to finish tied with Maresa Jenson from the University of Puget Sound for medalist honors at the Puget Sound Invitational, which concluded on Friday, March 7 at the Fircrest Country Club. Ueno and Jenson each carded a 36-hole total of 174 on the par 75 course.
Ueno shot an 86 on the first day and added an 88 in the second round. Jenson carded an 84 in the first round, then shot 90 over the final 18 holes. both golfers finished three strokes in front of Brynn Hurdus (91-86) of Linfield College and Kristine Juhola (89-88) of Puget Sound, who tied for third place at 177. Sarah Bicker from UPS placed fifth with a score of 179 (88-91).
In the team standings, Puget Sound ranked first with a score of 721 (352-369). Linfield was second at 750 (379-371) and Pacific Lutheran University was third at 836 (442-394). The Lutes dropped 48 strokes from the first day to the second day. Willamette, which held third place by two strokes over PLU after the first round, concluded the event in fourth place at 872 (440-432).
Ueno, who missed the fall season while studying abroad, recorded her first win of the 2007-08 athletic year. She competed at the NCAA Division III National Championships and took 10th place as a freshman in 2005-06.
Ashley Buchheit (Sr., Mt. Angel, OR/John F. Kennedy HS) of Willamette improved by seven strokes on the second day at UPS to finish with a score of 217 (112-105). Andrea Hand (Jr., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS), also from WU, ended the event with a score of 234 (117-117).
The Bearcats will be in action again on March 15-16, when they host the Willamette Invitational at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn. Ore. Tee time is set for 12 p.m. for the first round and for 10 a.m. to start the second round.
