Ueno Wins Individual Title at NWC Spring Classic
BANKS, ORE. -- Willamette University golfer Whitney Ueno (Jr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) carded a 79 on the second day of the Northwest Conference Spring Classic, Saturday, March 29 at the Quail Valley Golf Course, as she won the individual title with a two-day total of 160. Ueno, who led by five stroke after shooting an 81 under difficult weather condition in the first round on Friday, won the event by seven strokes.
Brynn Hurdus of Linfield College took second place. She shot a 78 on Saturday for the low round of the tournament. Her overall score, including an 89 in the first round, was 167. Kelly Hartley of Pacific University finished third at 172 (89-83) and Maresa Jenson from the University of Puget Sound was fourth at 178 (88-90).
Brittany Zefkeles of George Fox University, who began the day in second place after shooting an 86 on Friday, concluded the tournament with a 93. She took fifth place with a score of 179.
By winning the NWC Spring Classic, Ueno clinched All-Northwest Conference honors for the third consecutive year. She also earned All-NWC recognition as a freshman and a sophomore.
The All-NWC Women's Golf Team includes the winners of the NWC Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic, plus the top six finishers at the NWC Championship. This year's NWC Championship event is set for April 19-20 at the Aspen Lakes Country Club in Sisters, Ore.
Pacific and Linfield tied for first place in the final team standings with scores of 724 for 36 holes. Puget Sound placed third at 734, with George Fox in fourth at 746. Whitworth University was fifth at 770 and Willamette was sixth at 830. Whitman College and Pacific Lutheran University did not field full teams. Lewis & Clark College did not compete.
Joining Ueno on Willamette's team were Ashley Buchheit (Sr., Mount Angel, OR/John F. Kennedy HS), Andrea Hand (Jr., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) and Marianne Ward (Sr., Sierra Madre, CA/La Salle HS), Buchheit finished at 205 (102-103). Hand concluded the tournament at 224 (107-117), and Ward carded an overall score of 241 (120-121).
Willamette has one more meet scheduled prior to the NWC Championship. The Bearcats will compete at the Linfield Invitational on Friday, April 11 at the Michelbook Country Club in McMinnville, Ore.
