Willamette is Successful at Behind Ross Island Regatta
PORTLAND, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's and women's rowing teams had a successful day at the Behind Ross Island Regatta on Saturday, March 8 at Oaks Park in Portland, Ore. Willamette won a total of seven events, with the women's team providing five wins and the men's squad supplying a pair of victories. The course covered 2,600 meters, with all of the races taking place under calm conditions.
Willamette won the Women's Varsity 4+ in 9:47 for a margin of victory of 53 seconds over Lewis & Clark College. L&C took second place in the five-team field. The WU women's team also won the WN4+ in 10:21, as the Bearcats recorded a time that would have placed second in the varsity race.
Members of the WU women's varsity 4+ crew were Lauren Schwartz (Sr., Medford, OR/St. Mary's HS) at four seat, Laura Jones (Sr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) at three seat, Hillary Andrus (So., Chimacum, WA/Chimacum HS) at two seat, Julie Vernarsky (So., Enterprise, OR/Enterprise HS) at stroke and Erica Soma (Fr., Scotts Valley, CA/Scotts Valley HS) at coxswain.
The Bearcat women's novice 4+ featured Kesa Sovulewski (Fr., Bozeman, MT/Bozeman HS) at four seat, Jamaica Sweet (Fr., Florence, OR/Siuslaw HS) at three seat, Geneva Hooten (Fr., Vancouver, WA/Mountain View HS) at two seat, Fran Clawson (Fr., Bozeman, MT/Bozeman HS) at stroke and Megan Delph (So., West Linn, OR/West Linn HS) at coxswain.
Other wins for the Bearcat women were achieved in the Women's Lightweight 4+ (10:49), the Women's Varsity Lightweight Pair (11:50) and the WN8+ (9:24).
The Willamette men's team won the MV8+ (8:40) and the MV4+ (9:19). In the MV4+ race, the Bearcats finished 12 seconds in front of Lewis & Clark and more than two minutes in front of Portland State University and Pacific University.
WU will return to the water on Saturday, March 29 at the Daffodil Cup in Lakewood, Wash. Race time is set for 8 a.m. (PDT).
