Brooke Smith Leads NWC Heptathlon at End of First Day

NEWBERG, ORE. -- Willamette University's Brooke Smith (Jr., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) leads the heptathlon after the first day of the NWC Multi-Event Championships, hosted by George Fox University. Smith achieved an overall score of 2,531 through the first four events on Monday, April 7, with the final three events set for Tuesday, April 8.

Smith holds a 19-point lead over Caitlin McGrane from the University of Puget Sound and a 62-point lead over Melissa Leighty of George Fox. McGrane ended the day with 2,512 points, while Leighty had 2,469 points. Sarah Burton (Fr., Fallon, NV/Churchill County HS) from Willamette was eighth with 2,033 points and Willamette's Jessica Cobley (Fr., Queensbury, NY/Queensbury HS) was 12th with 1,935 points.

In the decathlon, Trevor May Fr., Florence, OR/Siuslaw HS) of Willamette was ninth after five events, with a score of 2,903. Evin Colignon (Fr., Poulsbo, WA/Charles Wright Academy), also from Willamette, was 10th with 2,858 points. Josh Lovell of Linfield College was the leader at the end of the day, as he earned 3,604 points.
