Fahey is Chosen NWC Women's Field Athlete of the Week
SALEM, ORE. -- Melinda Fahey (Salem, OR/McKay HS) from the Willamette University track and field team, has been named NWC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 13, 2008. Fahey broke her own school record and took first place in the hammer throw with a toss of 162'4" at the L&C Invitational.
Fahey extended her Willamette record in the hammer by more than eight feet. The previous record of 153'7" was set by Fahey earlier this season. Both of her record throws have been provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III National Championships.
During the L&C Invitational, Fahey also threw the discus and took third place with a distance of 136'1". Her throw was one inch short of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.
The Willamette women’s track and field team has won six consecutive Northwest Conference titles. The Bearcats will defend their winning streak this weekend at the NWC Championships, hosted by George Fox University in Newberg, Ore. Competition will start on Friday, April 18 and conclude on Saturday, April 19.
