Ueno Leads NWC Championship after First Day
SISTERS, ORE. -- Whitney Ueno (Jr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette University shot a 79 to take the lead after the first day of the Northwest Conference Women's Golf Championship, Saturday, April 19 at the Aspen Lakes Country Club. Ueno held a two-stroke lead. Willamette University was in seventh place in the team standings.
The NWC Championship will continue on Sunday, April 20 with the final 18 holes. Ueno is seeking her second NWC title, after winning the championship in 2006.
Ueno shot 41 on the front nine and 38 on the back nine to secure her lead. Tami Park of Pacific University was in second place with an 81. Sarah Bicker from the University of Puget Sound and Krystal Pitkonen of Whitworth University were tied for third place at 84. Three golfers were tied for fifth at 85.
In the team standings, Pacific led the way with a score of 343. Whitworth was second at 350, with George Fox University in third at 354. Puget Sound held fourth place at 358, Linfield was fifth at 363, Pacific Lutheran was sixth at 394 and Willamette was seventh at 397. Lewis & Clark did not field a complete team and Whitman College did not compete.
Ueno was joined by four other Bearcats to round out WU's team. Ashley Buchheit (Sr., Mount Angel, OR/John F. Kennedy HS) shot a 97 (49-48). Andrea Hand (Jr., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) carded a 109 (60-49) and Marianne Ward (Sr., Sierra Madre, CA/La Salle HS) shot a 1112 (60-52). Geneva Hale (Sr., Shoreline, WA/Shorecrest HS) finished at 117 (61-56).
