Willamette Finishes Sixth in NWC Men's Golf

YAKIMA, WASH. -- Willamette University finished in sixth place at the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Championship, played April 19-20 at the Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, Wash. Linfield College won the tournament with a score of 591 and also claimed the overall NWC title. Max Bonk from Pacific University earned medalist honors by carding a 141 (68-73) over 36 holes.

Linfield was followed in the team standings by Whitworth University in second place with a score of 605. Pacific was third at 609, the University of Puget Sound was fourth at 618, with Pacific Lutheran University fifth at 625, Willamette sixth at 651, George Fox University seventh at 694, Lewis & Clark College eighth at 702 and Whitman College ninth at 705.

Ben Bryant (Jr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) led the Bearcats with an overall score of 158 (80-78). He finished 18th in the final individual standings. Bryan shot a 78 in the second round and Robbie Beard (So., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) carded a 78 in the first round to tie for Willamette's best round.

Dave Bennett (Sr., Coos Bay, OR/Marshfield HS) finished second on Willamette's overall scorecard for the weekend at 160 (79-81). Shane Adversalo (So., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) shot a 166 (84-82) for the Bearcats.

Linfield surged out to the lead on Saturday by shooting an even-par 288 during the opening round. The Wildcats followed up with a 303 on Sunday to finish at 591 and win by 14 strokes.

Bonk shot a 4-under par 68 in the first round and added a 73 in the second round to top the individual standings at 3-under. He won by four strokes over Chris Packard of Pacific Lutheran (71-74--145) and Andrew Fitch of Linfield (69-76--145).

Bonk, Packard and Fitch earned spots on the NWC All-Conference Team. Also qualifying for All-Conference honors were Tyler Nelson of Linfield at 146 (72-74), along with Whitworth golfers Jordan Carter, Conner McCracken and Andrew Parrott. Nelson took fourth place, while Carter finished fifth at 149 (78-71). McCracken shot 150 (75-75) to tie Andrew Parrott 150 (76-74) for sixth place.

Linfield came into the NWC Championship tournament tied with Pacific and Whitworth for the conference lead, each with 14 points based on finishes in the NWC Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic. The NWC Championship counted for one-half of the overall NWC title, with Linfield adding 16 points to its total by winning over the weekend.

The final NWC standings and point totals were: 1st - Linfield 30; 2nd - Whitworth 28; 3rd - Pacific 26; 4th (tie) - Puget Sound 18 and Pacific Lutheran 18; 6th - Willamette 12; 7th - George Fox 5; 8th - Lewis & Clark 4; 9th - Whitman 3.
