Brooke Smith Holds Eighth Place in Heptathlon after First Day at National Meet

OSHKOSH, WISC. -- Brooke Smith (Jr., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) of Willamette University is in eighth place after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships. Her efforts on Thursday, May 22 have given her 2,723 points, an increase over her qualifying score which stood at 2,664 after one day.

Smith took fifth place out of 18 competitors in two of the first four events. She tied for fifth in the high jump at 5'2.5" and was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 33'10.75". She finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.35 seconds.

Kaelene Lundstrom of Gustavus Adolphus College was leading the heptathlon at the end of the first day with a score 3,015 points. The heptathlon will conclude on Friday, May 23 with the final three events: long jump, javelin throw, 800-meter run.

Carly Killam (Sr., Kailua, HI/Punahou School) took 15th place for Willamette in the women's 1,500-meter run. Killam's time was 4:40.22. The cutoff for advancing to the finals was 3:37.95.

Willamette concluded the first day by competing in the the preliminaries of the women's 4 x 400-meter relay. The Bearcats finished fifth in the third heat and 13th overall with a time of 3:54.03.

The Bearcats did not make the cut of 3:51.16 for finals in the relay. Running for Willamette in the prelims were Jennifer Luecht (So., Milwaukie, OR/Rex Putnam HS), Jordyn Smith (Sr., Henderson, NV/Green Valley HS), Kaitlin St. John (So., Bend, OR/Mountain View HS) and Lydia Marsalli (So., Klamath Falls, OR/Klamath Union HS).

Willamette will be involved in three events on Friday. In addition to Brooke Smith in the heptathlon, other competitors for WU on Friday will be Jordyn Smith in the preliminary heats of the women's 800-meter run and Jena Winger (Jr., Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS) in the finals of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. All entrants in the steeplechase will compete in the finals with no preliminary heats.

The final day of the National Championships is scheduled for Saturday, May 24. On Saturday, Brooke Smith will compete in the women's javelin and Grant Piros (Jr., Newberg, OR/Newberg HS) will participate in the men's javelin. The schedule for Saturday also includes Willamette runner Ian Batch (Jr., Eagle, ID/Capital HS) in the men's 5,000-meter run and Winger in the women's 5,000-meter run.

If Jordyn Smith advances into the finals of the 800, she also will compete on Saturday. Last year, Smith took seventh in the 800 to earn All-America honors for the third consecutive season. She previously achieved All-America status in the 400-meter hurdles (5th in 2005) and the 4 x 400-meter relay (2nd in 2006).
