Jordyn Smith Earns NCAA Automatic Berth in 800-Meter Run at Pacific Twilight
FOREST GROVE, ORE. -- Willamette University track and field athlete Jordyn Smith (Sr., Henderson, NV/Green Valley HS) recorded an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Division III National Championships while winning the 800-meter run at the Pacific Twilight on Friday, April 2. Carly Killam (Sr., Kailua, HI/Punahou School) registered a provisional qualifying time in the same race, as she achieved a fourth place finish.
Smith won the 800 with a time of 2:11.38 to meet the automatic qualifying standard of 2:11.50. Smith's time was just under a minute away from her career best of 2:10.42, set during the preliminary heats at the NCAA National Championships in 2007. She finished seventh in the finals at Nationals last year.
Killam cleared the partial qualifying standard by just over one-half of a second with a time of 2:14.47. The provisional qualifying mark is 2:15.00.
Smith and Killam have achieved a qualifying time in two events this spring. Smith previously earned a provisional time in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:03.90. Killam already owned a provisional qualifying result in the 1,500-meter run at 4:39.71.
Ian Batch (Sr., Eagle, ID/Capital HS) finished within 0.16 seconds of the provisional mark in the men's 1,500-meter run. He won the event with a time of 3:55.96, as he barely missing the standard of 3:55.80. Lydia Marsalli (So., Klamath Fall, OR/Klamath Union HS) took second in the 400-meter run in 57.89 seconds, just 0.39 from the provisional standard of 57.50 seconds.
In the women's 200-meter run, Jennifer Luecht (So., Milwaukie, OR/Rex Putnam HS) was timed at 25.75 seconds. She concluded the race in third place and was 0.43 seconds away from the provisional mark of 25.32 seconds. Marsalli was fourth in the race at 26.02 seconds.
Holly Winter (Jr., Dundee, OR/Newberg HS) took third in the women's hammer throw. She recorded a distance of 126'6". Melinda Fahey (Sr., Salem, OR/McKay HS) was fourth in the women's discus with a throw of 124'9".
Garrison Coy (Jr., Gig Harbor, WA/Gig Harbor HS) was fourth in the men's 400-meter hurdles. His time was 56.26 seconds. Jacob Monroe (Jr., Keizer, OR/McNary HS) took fifth place in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 143'1".
