Brooke Smith is Second in Heptathlon after First Day of Willamette Multi-Event

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University track and field athlete Brooke Smith (Jr., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) was in second place out of seven competitors in the heptathlon at the end of the first day of the Willamette Multi-Event meet, Sunday, May 4 at the Charles Bowles Track. Smith's score through four of the seven events was 2,664.

Bridget Johnson of Team XO led the heptathlon with a score of 3,056. Following Smith were Melissa Leighty of George Fox University in third at 2,659 and Caitlin McGrane from the University of Puget Sound in fourth at 2,478. Josh Lovell of Linfield College owned first place in the decathlon with a score of 3,733, while Jeremy Lovell was in second place at 3,596.

Smith scored over 600 points in three of Sunday's four events in the heptathlon. She tied for first place with Johnson in the high jump, as both athletes cleared 5'3" to score 736 points. Smith's top score of the day was in the 100-meter hurdles, which she completed in 15.60 seconds.

Action at the Willamette Multi-Event will conclude on Monday, May 5. Competition is set to resume at 11 a.m. (PDT).
