Bearcats Split Matches at Bruin-Wildcat Invitational
NEWBERG, ORE. -- The Willamette University volleyball team opened the 2008 season with a 3-2 victory over Mills College at the Bruin-Wildcat Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29 on the campus of George Fox University, but fell to George Fox, 3-0, later in the day. Against Mills, the Bearcats rallied for a 25-27, 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 15-7 victory. GFU defeated Willamette, 25-17, 22-22, 25-20.
The Bearcats are 1-1 on the season. They will take on Menlo College at 9 a.m. (PDT) and Warner Pacific College at 1 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday, Aug. 30 to conclude the Bruin-Wildcat Invitational.
Jessica Durham (Sr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) led the Bearcats against Mills, as she tallied 13 kills, 12 digs and three service aces. Kelley Lindstrom (Sr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS) added 11 kills and Jessica McGraw (Jr., OH, Gaston, OR/Corban College) recorded 10 kills.
Clare Chedester (Sr., LIB, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) provided the 'Cats with 25 assists against the Cyclones, while Christine Deion (Sr., S, San Jose, CA/University of Portland) tacked on 17 assists. Willamette was strong at the net and finished with 18 team total blocks.
Against George Fox, McGraw registered a match-high 12 kills for Willamette. Dion amassed 23 assists during the match, while Chedester contributed 17 digs.
GFU displayed a balanced attack, as Jessica Morrison topped the Bruins with five kills. The Bruins achieved 15 blocks to stop Willamette's offense at the net.
Statistics from Friday's matches are available below. Mills did not record stats during the match (they will get them from video later). As a result, the WU versus Mills match has stats for the Bearcats, but not for the Cyclones.
