Menlo and Warner Pacific Defeat Willamette at Bruin-Wildcat Invitational
NEWBERG, ORE. -- Willamette University took one set in each match at the Bruin-Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 30, but the Bearcats were outlasted by Menlo College and Warner Pacific College by 3-1 final scores. Menlo defeated Willamette, 25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18. Warner Pacific rallied past the Bearcats, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-16.
Jessica Durham (Sr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) recorded 13 kills and eight digs against Menlo. Jessica McGraw (Jr., OH, Gaston, OR/Corban College) contributed nine kills against the Oaks, while Clare Chedester (Jr., LIB, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) provided 22 assists, five service aces and seven digs.
Menlo received a match-high 18 kills from Deborah Bekowies, who hit .321 with only one attacking error. Sarah Poole registered nine kills and three block assists. Shelby Goldman topped all players with 52 digs. The Oaks benefited from 25 attacking errors by the Bearcats.
In the match with Warner Pacific, the 'Cats were led by Kelley Lindstrom (Sr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS), who earned 17 kills and produced a .283 hitting percentage. Lindstrom also accumulated nine digs and added five block solos. McGraw was credited with nine kills and two block solos. Christine Dion (Sr., S, San Jose, CA/University of Portland) finished the match with 23 assists for the Bearcats.
Willamette won the first set with Warner Pacific, 25-21. The Knights countered with three consecutive wins, including a hard-fought 25-22 victory in Game #3 to claim 2-1 advantage.
The Bearcats are 1-3 on the season. Willamette will return to action in the home opener against crosstown rival Corban College on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Match time at Cone Field House in Salem, Ore., is set for 7 p.m. (PDT).
Statistics from Saturday's matches are available below. Warner Pacific did not record stats during the match (they will get them from video later). As a result, the WU versus WPC match has stats for the Bearcats, but not for the Knights.
