Men's Tennis Players are Chosen ITA Scholar-Athletes
SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Four players on the Willamette University men’s tennis team have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2007-08 season, as selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. A total of 238 players were chosen nationwide from NCAA Division III teams to receive ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.
Bearcats included on the Scholar-Athlete list were Geoff Klein (Sr., Sagle, ID/Sandpoint HS), Eric MacMillan (Sr., Twin Falls, ID/Twin Falls HS), Micah Mack (So., Wenatchee, WA/Wenatchee HS) and Jordan Helvie (Fr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly HS). Klein, MacMillan and Mack were repeat selections.
In order to achieve ITA Scholar-Athlete status, tennis players were required to achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) during the 2007-08 academic year. They also had to be letterwinners on their respective teams and had to attend their current colleges or universities for at least one full academic year by the end of the season.
The Bearcats finished fifth in the Northwest Conference at 8-8 during the regular season and received an NWC Tournament berth. Willamette edged Whitworth University, 5-4, in the first round of the tournament, before falling to eventual champion Whitman College, 6-3, in the semifinals. Linfield College defeated the Bearcats, 6-3, in the third place match. WU finished the season with a 9-11 overall record.
MacMillan was chosen First Team All-Northwest Conference. He earned a 14-5 record in singles, including a 10-5 mark in NWC regular season action.
